A credit report is a summary of a person’s borrowing and repayment history, maintained by one of the four RBI-licensed credit bureaus in India: TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, CRIF High Mark and Equifax. Most lenders review at least one of these before approving a loan, credit card or any other credit product.

## [What’s inside a credit report?](#whats-inside-a-credit-report)

A typical credit report includes:

- A three-digit credit score (most bureaus use a 300–900 range)
- List of active and closed loans and credit cards
- Current outstanding amounts
- Payment history, including late payments or defaults
- Recent credit enquiries
- Overall utilisation and risk indicators

The same person can have slightly different scores across CIBIL, Experian, CRIF and Equifax. Each bureau uses its own scoring model and receives data from lenders at different times, so small variations are normal.

## [Why lenders pull credit reports](#why-lenders-pull-credit-reports)

- Decide whether to approve a personal, business or MSME loan
- Assess risk before increasing existing credit limits
- Identify early warning signs in the portfolio
- Spot applicants who already have multiple overdue accounts
- Meet regulatory expectations around responsible lending

In short, a credit report helps avoid lending to people who are already over-leveraged or have a history of delayed repayments.

## [How credit checks fit into the wider verification process](#how-credit-checks-fit-into-the-wider-verification-process)

In most lending flows, the credit report is not the first step. Teams usually start with basic identity verification - [PAN verification](https://www.fastkyc.com/blog/identity-verification-using-pan/) is the most common starting point.

If the applicant is a business or MSME, many lenders also check [GST](https://www.fastkyc.com/blog/how-to-verify-gst-online/) registration details. You can read our full guide on GST verification.

Once identity and business status are confirmed, the credit report becomes the next logical layer. It shows not just who the person is and whether their business is registered, but how they have actually handled credit over time.

### 1\. Through the official bureau websites

Individuals can request one free credit report per year from each bureau. Visit the official sites, enter basic details (usually PAN, name, date of birth and mobile number), complete OTP verification, and download the report.

- [TransUnion CIBIL](https://www.transunioncibil.com/)
- [Experian India](https://www.experian.in/)
- [CRIF High Mark](https://www.crifhighmark.com/)
- [Equifax India](https://www.equifax.co.in/)

This works for personal use, but is not practical when checking large volumes of applications.

### 2\. Through an API

Most lenders and fintechs use APIs. You send the required details (typically PAN + name + date of birth + mobile) and receive the score and report in the response.

At FastKYC we support reports from:

- CIBIL
- Experian (including the newer V2 version)
- CRIF
- Equifax

You can pull a single bureau or multiple ones. Many lenders start with CIBIL and add Experian or CRIF for a second opinion, especially for thin-file or new-to-credit applicants.

- Credit Score
- Credit Bureau
- Loan Verification
- Financial History
- Creditworthiness

## Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why do scores differ across bureaus?

Each bureau uses its own scoring model and may receive data from lenders at different times. A difference of 20–50 points is common and does not necessarily mean one report is wrong.

Do I need all four reports for every application?

Not always. Many lenders begin with CIBIL. Adding a second bureau (Experian or CRIF) often gives a fuller picture, particularly when the first report has limited history or the applicant is new to credit.

What details are required to pull a report?

Usually PAN, full name, date of birth and mobile number. Some flows may also require user consent or an OTP for authentication.

Can credit report checks be automated?

Yes. APIs allow the check to run in real time during the application flow, so there is no need to download reports manually for each applicant.

How often is credit data updated?

Lenders report data regularly (often every 15–30 days). An API pull reflects the latest information available at the bureau at that moment.
